Palmer Reaches Round of 16 at Wilson/ITA Northwest Regional

SALEM, ORE. -- Shannon Palmer (Fr., Salem, OR/Sprague HS) of Willamette University won two singles matches on Saturday, Sept. 27 to advance into the Round of 16 at the Wilson/ITA Small College Northwest Regional Women's Tennis Championship. Willamette is hosting the regional at the WU Tennis Courts and the Salem Swim and Tennis Club. Action resumes on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. (PDT), with the championship finals in singles and doubles set for Monday.

Palmer, seeded #4 in the 64-player singles bracket, will take on Janell Talbot of Whitworth University on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. at the WU Tennis Courts. Palmer defeated Ashley Dombrow from the University of Puget Sound in the first round, 6-0, 6-0, before easily moving past Sarah Watanabe of Linfield College, 6-0, 6-1 in the second round.

Seven of the eight seeded players in singles advanced to the Round of 16. Samantha Taylor from UPS, seeded #7, lost in the second round to Emily Rolston of Whitman College, 6-2, 6-2.

In doubles action, Palmer and Abby Funabiki (Sr., Pullman, WA/Pullman HS) defeated their first round opponents, Dayna Wong and Jaime Yoshino of Pacific University, 8-6. Palmer and Funabiki will take on Dombrow and Devin Fields of UPS in the Round of 16 at 1 p.m. Sunday at the WU Tennis Courts.

Aurora Landau (Fr., Anchorage, AK/West Anchorage HS) and Jamie Slonaker (So., Bainbridge Island, WA/Bainbridge HS) of Willamette also advanced to the Round of 16 in doubles. They defeated Mackenzie Hales and Charlie McKiver of Whitman, 8-0, in the first round. Landau and Slonaker will play Sophie Larson and Kiana Nip of Linfield at 2 p.m. on Sunday at WU.
