Bearcats Compete at Second Day of USTA/ITA Northwest Regional

Gutierrez Eliminated in Singles Round of 16

PORTLAND, ORE. -- The Willamette University women's tennis team competed at the second day of the USTA/ITA Northwest Small College Championships, hosted by Lewis & Clark College on Sunday, Sept. 22.

Sabrina Gutierrez (Jr., Newbury Park, CA/Newbury Park HS) lost a closely-fought match in the singles round of 16, while the Bearcats' doubles team of Taylor Coggeshall and Nebraska Lucas was also eliminated from competition.

Gutierrez, seeded fifth in the singles bracket, faced off against Kaitlyn Lomartire of Pacific University. Lomartire, who was seeded 14th, needed three sets and a tiebreaker to defeat Gutierrez, 7-6, 5-7, 11-9.

In doubles action, Coggeshall and Lucas dropped an 8-0 decision to Linfield College's tandem of Gretchen Jernstedt and Kaila Nip.

The Northwest Regional will continue on Monday, Sept. 23. Winners of the singles and doubles brackets will advance to the USTA/ITA Small College National Championships later this fall.
