Smith Selected as NWC Women's Tennis Student-Athlete of the Week

Receives Honor for Second Time this Season

SALEM, ORE. -- Mikaila Smith (Fr., Mill Valley, CA/Tamalpais HS) of Willamette University has been chosen as the Northwest Conference Women's Tennis Student-Athlete of the Week for her strong play against Linfield College on April 15 and George Fox University on April 19. It is the second time Smith has received the Student-Athlete of the Week award this year.

This past week, Smith achieved a 2-0 record in #2 singles and a 1-1 record in #1 doubles.

At #2 singles, she defeated Basia Kopecka of Linfield, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2, and downed Chantelle Hadeed of George Fox in a super tie-breaker played instead of a third set, 3-6 7-5, 12-10.

In doubles, she combined with Denise Poltavski to defeat Sarah Tuemmler and Hadeed of GFU, 8-2, but lost to Ella Riddle and Mackenzie Fraser of Linfield, 8-6. For the season, Smith is 12-6 in singles and 10-8 in doubles.

Linfield, ranked #36 in NCAA Division III, defeated the Bearcats, 8-1. George Fox outscored Willamette, 6-3.

Smith previously earned the Student-Athlete of the Week award on March 23 after going 2-0 in singles and 1-1 in doubles in matches against Schreiner University (Texas) and Occidental College (Calif.).

Mikaila Smith went 2-0 in the singles and 1-1 in doubles for the Bearcats last week.
