  • Four Bearcats Earn All-Academic Honors in Cross Country

    SALEM, ORE. -- Four athletes on the Willamette University cross country teams have received All-Academic status from the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for the 2011 season. Two runners on the Willamette men's team and two runners from the Bearcat women's team were chosen for the award.

Willamette was represented by a full team entry of seven athletes in the women's race, plus two athletes from the Bearcat men's team who earned individual bids to the NCAA Championships.

    CLAREMONT, CALIF. -- The Willamette University women's cross country team took second place at the NCAA Division III West Regional on Saturday, Nov. 12 to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championships in Winneconne, Wis., next weekend. Michaela Freeby (Fr., Milwaukie, OR/Rex Putnam HS) led Willamette with a ninth place finish.
  • Bearcats to Battle for West Region Titles in Cross Country

    SALEM, ORE. -- The Willamette University cross country teams are set to battle for West Region championships this weekend on the Pomona-Pitzer campus in Claremont, Calif. The Bearcat men will be out to win their second consecutive West Region title and eighth title since 2002. Willamette will be seeking its sixth West Region women's title since 2003.

    SALEM, ORE. -- The Willamette University women's cross country team grasped its first spot in the NCAA Division III National Poll this week by surpassing seven teams to claim the #28 ranking. The Bearcat women also moved up to the #3 spot in the West Region Rankings this week, after three WU runners finished in the top 10 at the NWC Championships on Oct. 29.

    WHEATLAND, ORE. -- Leo Castillo (Sr., Parkdale, OR/Hood River Valley HS) from Willamette University won his second consecutive Northwest Conference cross country championship by finishing first in a field of 83 runners at the 2011 NWC Championships at Willamette Mission State Park on Saturday, Oct. 29. Castillo registered a winning time of 25:02.52 for a margin of victory of 19.22 seconds.
  • Bearcats to Compete at Northwest Conference Championships

    WHEATLAND, ORE. -- The Willamette University cross country teams will compete at the 2011 Northwest Conference Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Oct. 29 at Willamette Mission State Park. The NWC men's and women's individual and team championships will be on the line, with the women's 6-kilometer race starting at 10 a.m. (PDT), followed by the men's 8-kilometer race at 11 a.m.

    OREGON CITY, ORE. -- The Willamette University men's cross country team took first place and the Bearcat women's team finished in second place at the Mike Hodges Invitational, hosted by Clackamas Community College on Friday, Oct. 14. Willamette's men recorded a solid winning score of 24, while the WU women's squad earned a score of 62 and trailed only Oregon State University in the team standings.

    SALEM, ORE. -- Leo Castillo (Sr., Parkdale, OR/Hood River Valley HS) and Michaela Freeby (Fr., Milwaukie, OR/Res Putnam HS), both from Willamette University, placed 11th in their respective races at the 37th Annual Charles Bowles Willamette Invitational at Bush's Pasture Park on Saturday, Oct. 1. Castillo was 11th in the Men's Cardinal 8K Race at 24:36.55 and Freeby took 11th in the Women's Cardinal 5K Race at 18:21.20.
  • Bearcats Prepare for 37th Annual Charles Bowles Willamette Invitational

    SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University hosts one of the largest college cross country meets on the West Coast each year. This sizable running event has become as much a part of Salem as rain in the winter, dry weather in the summer and the Oregon State Fair from mid-August into early September. This year, it's the 37th Annual Charles Bowles Willamette Invitational that will continue the tradition on Saturday, Oct. 1.

    SALEM, ORE. -- The Willamette University men's cross country team, which won the West Region title and finished 23rd at the NCAA Championships last season, is ranked #22 in the nation in the 2011 NCAA Division III Preseason Poll released by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Wednesday, Aug. 25. The Bearcat men's team also is ranked #1 in the West Region, while the WU women's cross country team is ranked #6 in the West Region.
