    SALEM, ORE. -- Cameron Mitchell (Jr., Post, Portland, OR/Grant HS/Univ. of Redlands) of Willamette University has been chosen Second Team All-West Region by D3Hoops.com. The All-West Region squad was determined in voting by Sports Information Director from throughout the Region.

    SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University has chosen its new head coaches for the men's basketball and women's basketball teams. Both coaches have been hired from within Willamette's own coaching staff. In fact, both coaches have significant ties to Willamette, including playing basketball for the Bearcats in college.

    SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University junior post Cameron Mitchell (Portland, OR/Grant HS/Univ. of Redlands), who led the Northwest Conference with 11.8 rebounds per game and ranked third in scoring with 16.7 points per contest, has been selected First Team All-NWC by the league's head men's basketball coaches. Kyler McClary (Sr., Post, Hillsboro, OR/Glencoe HS) of Willamette earned Second Team All-NWC honors for the second season in a row.

    SALEM, ORE. -- Head Coach Gordie James of the Willamette University men's basketball team has announced his retirement following the conclusion of his 22nd season as the leader of Bearcat Hoop. James will remain on the Willamette Athletics staff through the end of the current semester.

    SALEM, ORE. -- The University of Puget Sound men's basketball team finished the 2008-09 Northwest Conference season with an undefeated record -- barely -- as the Loggers rallied from a 15-point deficit with 8:34 remaining to defeat Willamette University, 75-74, at Cone Field House on Saturday, Feb. 21.

    NEWBERG, ORE. -- Cameron Mitchell (Jr., Post, Portland, OR/Grant HS) scored 24 points and hauled down 21 rebounds, leading Willamette University to an 87-82 Northwest Conference victory over George Fox University at the Wheeler Sports Center on Friday, Feb. 20. Willamette kept its NWC Tournament hopes alive at 12-10 overall, 8-7 in the NWC.

    WU Sweeps Homestand to Remain Alive in Playoff Chase: Coming off a weekend sweep of Pacific University and Lewis and Clark College, the Willamette University menâ??s basketball team finds itself one game out of the NWC Tournament with two games left to play. At 11-10 overall, and 7-7 in the NWC, WU is chasing both Linfield College (8-6 NWC) and Lewis & Clark (9-5 NWC) for the final two berth into the four-team tournament.

    SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University junior post Cameron Mitchell (Portland, OR/Grant HS/U. of Redlands) has been named Northwest Conference Men's Basketball Student-Athlete of the Week for his efforts in two wins by the Bearcats this past weekend. Mitchell averaged 16.0 points and 16.5 rebounds per game, while shooting 65.0% from the field (13 of 20). He also blocked a total of six shots, recorded three steals and earned two assists during the week.

    SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University trailed by eight points at halftime, but the Bearcats shot 52.4% in the second half to rally past Lewis & Clark College, 60-58, in a Northwest Conference game at Cone Field House on Saturday, Feb. 14. Cameron Mitchell (Jr., Post, Portland, OR/Grant HS/U. of Redlands) led the Bearcats with 16 points, 18 rebounds and five blocked shots.

    SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University received a double-double from junior post Cameron Mitchell (Portland, OR/Grant HS/U. of Redlands), as the Bearcats rolled past Pacific University, 81-71, in a Northwest Conference game on Friday, Feb. 13. Willamette led 79-61 with 1:58 left, before both teams put in their remaining subs and the Boxers closed the game with a 10-2 run.

    Back-to-Back Losses Leave WU in Tough Spot; Bearcats Head Home Looking for Momentum Swing: Head Coach Gordie James and the Willamette University menâ??s basketball team dropped a pair of road games in Eastern Washington over the weekend, leaving the â??Cats in fifth place in the Northwest Conference. Willamette lost on Friday, Feb. 6 at Whitworth University, 77-65, and fell on Saturday, Feb. 7 at Whitman College in overtime, 88-84.

    WALLA WALLA, WASH. -- Willamette University rallied from a nine-point deficit in the final eight minutes to force overtime, but Whitman College battled back in the extra session to defeat the Bearcats, 88-84, at the Sherwood Center on Saturday, Feb. 7. The Missionaries improved to 8-13 overall, 4-8 in the Northwest Conference, while Willamette fell to 9-10 overall, 5-7 in the NWC.

    SPOKANE, WASH. -- Senior post Kyler McClary (Hillsboro, OR/Glencoe HS) of Willamette University scored 23 points to pass the 1,000-point mark in his career, but Whitworth University ended the game with a 16-3 run, as the Pirates downed the Bearcats, 77-65, in a Northwest Conference game on Friday, Feb. 6. Whitworth improved to 16-4 overall, 8-3 in the NWC. Willamette dropped to 9-9 on the season, 5-6 in the NWC.

    SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University senior wing Corey Costantino (Ashland, OR/Ashland HS) has been named First Team ESPN The Magazine College Division Academic All-District VIII in men's basketball for the second year in a row. The Academic All-District Team was selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

    Willamette Defeats Lutes, Bearcats Head to Eastern Washington: Currently tied for fourth place (and the final tournament spot) in the NWC standings, the Willamette University menâ??s basketball team heads to Spokane, Wash., and Walla Walla, Wash., this weekend on its annual road swing through the state. Head Coach Gordie James led the Bearcats to a 67-53 victory over Pacific Lutheran University on Friday, Jan. 30 in Salem, Ore. The â??Cats evened their NWC mark at 5-5 (9-8 overall) and moved into a tie with Linfield College for fourth place.

    SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University senior post Kyler McClary (Hillsboro, OR/Glencoe HS) has been selected as the Northwest Conference Men's Basketball Student-Athlete of the Week for his efforts during the week ending Feb. 1, 2009. McClary started both of Willamette's games during the week and averaged 20.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per contest.

Willamette moved to 9-8 on the season, 5-5 in the Northwest Conference. Pacific Lutheran fell to 8-10 overall, 2-7 in the NWC.

    SALEM, ORE. -- Cody Tesoro scored 24 points, including 8 for 8 in the final 2:33, as Linfield College defeated Willamette University, 84-78, on Tuesday, Jan. 27 at Cone Field House. Linfield improved to 7-11 overall, while moving into sole possession of fourth place in the Northwest Conference at 5-4. Willamette dropped to 8-8 on the season, 4-5 in the NWC.

    TACOMA, WASH. -- The University of Puget Sound went on a 16-2 run in the first 3:41 of the second half, as the Loggers pulled away from Willamette University for a 100-62 Northwest Conference victory on Saturday, Jan. 24. Puget Sound, ranked 11th by D3Hoops.com, improved to 15-2 on the season, 8-0 in the NWC. Willamette fell to 8-7 overall, 4-4 in the NWC.

    SALEM, ORE. -- George Fox University hit eight of its first 11 shots to take a 20-9 lead, then held off a rally by Willamette in the closing minutes, to earn a 75-70 victory over the Bearcats in Northwest Conference action at Cone Field House on Friday, Jan. 23. George Fox won its second game in a row to improve to 6-10 overall, 2-5 in the NWC. Willamette fell to 8-6, including 4-3 in the NWC.

    Bearcats Earn Split on Road; One Weekend Remains in First Conference Round Robin: The Willamette Universityâ??s Bearcats overcame the Lewis and Clark College Pioneers over a three-day stretch, in a game extended because of a power outage, rallying in the second half on Monday, Jan. 19 for a 75-73 victory in Portland, Ore. The win pulled the Bearcats into a tie for second place in the NWC at 8-5 overall, 4-2 in the conference.

    PORTLAND, ORE. -- When Willamette University and Lewis & Clark College began playing on Saturday, Jan. 17, the Bearcats opened the game with an 18-6 run. It took two extra days due to a power outage at halftime, but Willamette also ended the contest on a roll, outscoring L&C 25-16 in the final 11:01 to take a 75-73 victory at the Pamplin Sports Center.

    PORTLAND, ORE. -- The Willamette University men's basketball game at Lewis & Clark College on Saturday, Jan. 17 was suspended at halftime due to a power outage. Lewis & Clark held a 35-32 lead at the intermission. Electrical power went out during halftime and was not expected to be restored until very late Saturday night.

Pacific upped its record to 7-6 overall, 2-3 in the Northwest Conference. Willamette went to 7-5 on the season, 3-2 in the NWC.

It was Michell's eighth double-double in 11 games this season.

    SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University was able to cut six points from Whitworth University's seven-point lead in the final 1:08, but the Bearcats couldn't get the go-ahead shot to fall, as the 15th-ranked Pirates (D3Hoops.com) held on for a 69-68 win at Cone Field House on Friday, Jan. 9. Whitworth improved to 11-1 on the season, including 3-0 in the Northwest Conference. The Bearcats fell to 6-4 overall, 2-1 in the NWC.
  • Willamette Slips Past Linfield, 61-58, With Free Throws in Final Minute

    McMINNVILLE, ORE. -- Three Willamette University players combined to go five of six at the free throw line in the final minute, leading the Bearcats to a 61-58 road victory over Linfield College on Tuesday, Jan. 6. The Bearcats improved to 6-3, while winning their sixth consecutive game. WU also upped its Northwest Conference record 2-0, with both wins on the road.
