  • Poltavski and Bearcats Receive Academic Awards from ITA

    SALEM, ORE. -- Denise Poltavski (Woodland Hills, CA/El Camino Real HS) and the Willamette University women's tennis team have received academic honors from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association for the 2013-14 season. Poltavski, a junior this past year, was selected as an ITA Scholar-Athlete, while the Bearcats received the ITA All-Academic Team award.

    OJAI, CALIF. -- Willamette University women's tennis player Sabrina Gutierrez (Sr., Newbury Park, CA/Newbury Park HS) lost in the Round of 16 in singles to the #1 seed, Lauren Stratman from Westmont College (Calif.), 6-0, 6-1, at the 114th Annual Ojai Valley Tournament on Friday, April 25. Gutierrez competed in the Women's Independent Colleges bracket.

Gutierrez and Poltavski were entered in the Women's Independent Colleges bracket, which included NCAA Division III and NAIA competitors.

    SALEM, ORE. -- George Fox University rallied past Willamette University in women's tennis on Friday, April 11 for a 5-4 Northwest Conference victory over the Bearcats at the WU Tennis Courts. GFU improved to 7-10 overall, 3-7 in the NWC. The Bearcats fell to 4-7, including 2-7 in the NWC.

The match was an exhibition because Willamette competes in the NCAA, which does not count competition against community colleges as part of a team's official record.

Gutierrez achieved a record of 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles, while leading the Bearcats to a pair of team victories.
