  • Baumgartner Chosen First Team Capitol One Academic All-District

    SALEM, ORE. -- Michael Baumgartner (So., Albany, OR/West Albany HS) from the Willamette University men's tennis team has been named First Team Capitol One Academic All-District VIII on the college division men's at-large team, as selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Baumgartner was one of just 11 student-athletes from a variety of sports who were named to the Academic All-District Team.

    OJAI, CALIF. -- Willamette University tennis player Cody Ferguson (Jr., North Bend, OR/North Bend HS/Western Oregon Univ.) opened the Ojai Valley Tournament with a singles victory over Ben Inchalik of California Lutheran University on Friday, April 29. Ferguson won the match in straight sets, taking the first set in a tie-breaker 7-6 (7-3), before prevailing in the second set, 6-1.

Highlighting the day's schedule was a victory by Cody Ferguson (Jr., North Bend, OR/North Bend HS/Western Oregon Univ.) over Ben Inchalik of California Lutheran University in the first round of the NCAA Division III Singles Bracket.

    SALEM, ORE. -- Four members of the Willamette University men's tennis team who helped the Bearcats achieve a 13-6 record this spring, including 11-1 in the Northwest Conference, have received 2011 All-NWC honors for their efforts, as determined by the NWC head coaches. The four Willamette athletes competed at the top four singles positions and also formed the Bearcats' top two doubles teams.

    WALLA WALLA, WASH. -- Whitman College, ranked #22 in the nation in NCAA Division III, defeated Willamette University, 5-0, in finals of Northwest Conference Tournament on Sunday, April 17 at the Whitman Outdoor Courts. The Missionaries won all three doubles matches and added wins at #2 singles and #4 singles to clinch the victory.

    WALLA WALLA, WASH. -- Willamette University defeated Whitworth University, 5-1, in the semifinals of the Northwest Conference Men's Tennis Tournament on Saturday, April 16. The Bearcats will now take on Whitman College in the finals on Sunday, April 17. Whitman defeated Pacific University, 5-0, in the other semifinal.

    SALEM, ORE. -- Hoping to continue the success it experienced during the regular season, the Willamette University men's tennis team will compete at the Northwest Conference Tournament this weekend (April 16-17) in Walla Walla, Wash. Willamette, seeded #2 with a 12-5 overall record and an 11-1 record in the NWC, will open the tournament against Whitworth University, seeded #3 with an 11-9 overall record, 8-4 in the NWC.

    SALEM, ORE. -- The Willamette University men's tennis team completed its regular season schedule with a 6-3 victory over visiting George Fox University at the WU Tennis Courts on Saturday, April 9. The Bearcats, who have clinched an NWC Tournament berth, advanced their record to 12-5 on the season, 11-1 in the NWC. George Fox finished its season at 6-10 overall, 5-7 in the NWC.

    McMINNVILLE, ORE. -- Willamette University defeated Northwest Conference rival Linfield College, 7-2, on Friday, April 8. The win allowed the Bearcats to complete a season sweep of the Wildcats. WU also downed Linfield, 6-3, on March 5 in Salem, Ore.

  • Baumgartner Wins #1 Singles to Send Willamette Past Pacific, 5-4

    SALEM, ORE. -- Michael Baumgartner (So., Albany, OR/West Albany HS) of Willamette University defeated Troy Zuroske of Pacific University in two tie-breakers, 7-6 (9-7), 7-6 (7-3), to send the Bearcats to a 5-4 victory over Pacific University on Friday, April 1. Most of the competition was played at the WU Tennis Courts on the Willamette campus, but darkness forced Baumgartner and Zuroske to finish the final match at the Courthouse Tennis Club.

    SALEM, ORE. -- Michael Baumgartner (Albany, OR/West Albany HS), a sophomore on the Willamette University men's tennis team, has been chosen Co-Northwest Conference Men's Tennis Student-Athlete of the Week for his efforts in matches played March 21-27. He shared the weekly honor with Taylor Dickey from Pacific Lutheran University.

    PORTLAND, ORE. -- Willamette University, ranked #11 in the West Region of NCAA Division III, improved to 7-1 in the Northwest Conference by defeating Lewis & Clark College, 8-1, on Saturday, March 26 at the LC Tennis Dome. The Bearcats moved to 8-5 on the season. Lewis & Clark dropped to 0-8 in the NWC and to 0-12 overall.

    CLAREMONT, CALIF. -- Bowdoin College in Maine, ranked #15 in men's tennis in the NCAA Division III national rankings, defeated Willamette University, 9-0, on Wednesday, March 23, in Claremont, Calif. Trinity College (Conn.), ranked #14 in the nation, also downed Willamette on Wednesday, 5-0.

The match will not be rescheduled. Instead, Willamette will take on Salisbury University (Md.) on Monday afternoon in Claremont, Calif.

Salisbury, ranked #9 in the Atlantic South Region of NCAA Division III, improved to 5-2 overall. Willamette, ranked #11 in the West Region, fell to 6-3 on the season.

Redlands, also ranked #4 in the West Region, improved to 6-6 on the season. Willamette, ranked #11 in the West Region, fell to 6-2.

    TACOMA, WASH. -- Willamette University won all six singles matches, helping the Bearcats roll past Pacific Lutheran University, 8-1, at the UPS Tennis Pavilion on Saturday, March 12. The win improved Willamette's record to 5-1 on the season, 5-1 in the Northwest Conference. PLU ended the evening with a 2-6 overall record, 1-6 in the NWC.

Baumgartner defeated Allen at #1 singles.

The Missionaries upped their season record to 3-2, including 3-0 in the NWC. Willamette fell to 1-1 overall, 1-1 in the conference.

Willamette, playing its season opener, moved to 1-0 on the season, 1-0 in the NWC. The Pirates dropped to 2-4, 1-1 in the NWC.

In the individual rankings, Cody Ferguson (Jr., North Bend, OR/Western Oregon Univ.) is ranked 15th and Josh Wong (So., Hilo, HI/Hilo HS) is ranked 29th. Natalia Agarycheva (Sr., Vancouver, WA/Univ. of Northern Colo.) is listed 9th in the women's rankings.

Ferguson was defeated by Andrew La Cava of Whitman College in the finals match, 6-1, 6-1.

Ferguson, seeded #8, defeated #3-seeded Jeff Tolman of Whitman College, 7-5, 6-4, in the quarterfinals on Sunday, Sept. 26.
