  • Anderson Named First Team All-NWC

    SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University junior Alaine Anderson (Santa Ana, CA/Foothills HS) has been named First Team All-Northwest Conference for her efforts during the 2006-07 season. Anderson was one of eight women's tennis players selected for the First Team. An additional six players earned Second Team honors.
  • Bearcats Give Whitman Solid Battle, but Missionaries Prevail, 5-4

    YAKIMA, WASH. -- Willamette University provided strong opposition for #3-seeded Whitman College in the first round of the Northwest Conference Tennis Championships on Friday, April 20, but the Missionaries took a 5-4 victory to advance to the semifinals. The Bearcats, seeded #6, won the #1 doubles match and claimed wins at #2, #3 and #4 singles, but lost a close match at #5 singles, as Maura Flaherty slipped past Abby Funabiki (So., Pullman, WA/Pullman HS), 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).
  • Whitworth Slips Past Willamette, 5-4, in Fifth Place Match at NWC Championships

    YAKIMA, WASH. -- Whitworth College won two of three doubles flights, which allowed the Pirates to lose #1, #2 and #3 singles, but still edge Willamette University, 5-4, in the fifth place match at the Northwest Conference Tennis Championships on Saturday, April 21. Willamette ended the season with an overall record of 7-15. Whitworth concluded the season at 10-12.
  • Puget Sound Defeats Bearcats, 6-3, in Final Regular Season Match

    TACOMA, WASH. -- The University of Puget Sound defeated Willamette University, 6-3, in the final regular season women's tennis match for both teams on Saturday, April 14. UPS improved to 13-4 overall, 12-4 in the Northwest Conference. The Loggers are tied with Whitman College for second place in the NWC, but UPS has the tie-breaker. As a result, UPS will receive a first round bye in the NWC Tournament, set for April 20-21 in Yakima. Wash.
  • Willamette Downs George Fox, 8-1, in NWC Road Match

    NEWBERG, ORE. -- Willamette University won two close matches on its way to sweeping the doubles competition, then won five of six matches in singles to defeat George Fox University, 8-1, on Friday, April 13. Willamette, which has won four of its last six matches, improved to 7-12 overall and to 6-9 in the Northwest Conference. George Fox dropped to 1-15 overall, 1-14 in the NWC.
  • Bearcats Gain Edge in Battle for NWC Playoff Berth with 8-1 Victory over Pioneers

    SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University needed to defeat Lewis & Clark College in women's tennis on Tuesday, April 10, in order to keep alive realistic hopes of qualifying for one of six Northwest Conference playoff berths. In fact, the Bearcats were seeking a decisive victory to gain a tie-breaker edge over the Pioneers, after losing at Lewis & Clark, 5-4, on March 3.
  • Willamette Women's Tennis versus Lewis & Clark Moved to Tuesday at Courthouse

    SALEM, ORE. -- The Willamette University home women's tennis match against Lewis & Clark College, originally scheduled for Saturday, April 7 has been moved to Tuesday, April 10 due to the weather. The match also has been moved indoors and will be played at the Courthouse Tennis Club (1339 Madison NE in Salem, Ore.) at 12 p.m. (PDT) on Tuesday. Willamette is currently 5-12 overall, 4-9 in the Northwest Conference. Lewis & Clark is 6-10 overall, 4-8 in the NWC. The Bearcats and the Pioneers are battling for sixth place in the NWC and the final NWC playoff berth.
  • Wildcats Defeat Bearcats, 7-2, in NWC Women's Tennis

    SALEM, ORE. -- Linfield College remained undefeated in Northwest Conference action, as the visiting Wildcats defeated Willamette University, 7-2, at the WU Tennis Courts on Friday, April 6. Linfield earned victories at #1 and #2 doubles, then won five of six sinlges matches. Willamette's only singles triumph was earned by Alaine Anderson (Jr., Santa Ana, CA/Foothills HS) at the #3 position, as she defeated Kelli Sides in a three-set thriller, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. It was Anderson's eighth consecutive victory in sinlges.

    (WOMEN'S TENNIS) SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University's home match with Pacific Lutheran University in women's tennis on Saturday, March 31 has been moved indoors due to the weather. With rain falling at the Willamette University Tennis Courts, the match will be played at the Courthouse Tennis Club (1139 Madison NE in Salem), starting at 4 p.m. (PDT) on Saturday. Willamette enters the match with an overall record of 5-10, including a 4-7 mark in the Northwest Conference. Pacific Lutheran is 9-3 overall, 7-3 in the NWC.
  • Pacific Lutheran Wins Hard-Fought Match with Bearcats, 6-3

    (WOMEN'S TENNIS) SALEM, ORE. -- Pacific Lutheran University and Willamette University played a very competitive women's tennis match on Saturday, March 31. When the action was completed at the Courthouse Tennis Club, the visiting Lutes owned a 6-3 victory over the Bearcats. PLU won two of three doubles matches and claimed four wins in singles to improve to 10-3 overall, 8-3 in the Northwest Conference. Willamette fell to 5-11 overall, 4-8 in the NWC.

    (WOMEN'S TENNIS) FOREST GROVE, ORE. -- Willamette University outplayed Pacific University in a Northwest Conference match on Friday, March 30, as the Bearcats defeated the Boxers, 8-1, at the Holce Tennis Courts. Willamette improved to 5-10 overall, including 4-7 in the NWC. Pacific fell to 0-13 overall, 0-11 in the NWC.

    (WOMEN'S TENNIS) KERRVILLE, TEXAS -- Tiffany Kam (Jr., Pearl City, HI/Punahou HS) won #1 singles and teamed with Alaine Anderson (Jr., Santa Ana, CA/Foothills HS) to win #1 doubles, as Willamette University edged Schreiner University, 4-3, on Wednesday, March 28. The win improved the Bearcats, who compete in NCAA Division III, to 4-10 on the season, while Schreiner, which competes in the NAIA, fell to 0-11.
  • Bearcats Lose at Trinity (Texas), 8-1

    (WOMEN'S TENNIS) SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS -- The Willamette University women's tennis team lost at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, 8-1, on Tuesday, March 27. WU's only victory was earned by Alaine Anderson (Jr., Santa Ana, CA/Foothills HS) at the #2 singles position, as she defeated Krista Melish, 7-5, 6-1. The Bearcats fell to 3-10 on the season, while Trinity evened its record at 8-8.
  • Women's Tennis Match at Texas Lutheran Canceled due to Weather

    (WOMEN'S TENNIS) SALEM, ORE. -- The Willamette University women's tennis team had its first match of Spring Break rained out at Texas Lutheran University on Monday, March 26 in Seguin, Texas. The Bearcats are still scheduled to play at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, on Tuesday, March 27. Head Coach Becky Roberts said she hopes to replace the Texas Lutheran match with another opponent on Wednesday, March 28 if possible. Willamette is currently 3-9 overall, 3-7 in the Northwest Conference.
  • Whitman Wins Three Close Matches in 7-2 Victory over Willamette

    (WOMEN'S TENNIS) WALLA WALLA, WASH. -- The difference between winning and losing was small for Willamette University on Sunday, March 18, as the Bearcats lost two close matches in doubles and one in singles before falling to Whitman College, 7-2, in Northwest Conference action. If the three close matches had ended in WUâ??s favor, the Bearcats would have claimed a 5-4 upset win. Instead, Whitman improved to 9-5 overall and to 7-3 in the NWC. Willamette dropped to 3-9 overall, 3-7 in the conference.

Puget Sound improved to 7-1 overall and to 6-1 in the NWC. Willamette dropped to 3-7 on the season, 3-5 in the NWC.

Willamette improved to 3-6 overall, including 3-4 in the NWC. The Bruins fell to 1-6 overall, 1-5 in the conference.

    (WOMEN'S TENNIS) PORTLAND, ORE. -- Lewis & Clark College edged Willamette University, 5-4, in a Northwest Conference match hosted by the Pioneeers on Saturday, March 3. L&C improved to 3-4 overall, 3-3 in the NWC, while Willamette dropped to 2-5 overaall, 2-3 in the confeerence.

    (WOMEN'S TENNIS) McMINNVILLE, ORE. -- Linfield College improved to 4-0 in the Northwest Conference by defeating Willamette University, 8-1, on Sunday, March 4 at the Linfield Tennis Center. The Wildcats, who have won five consecutive NWC titles, improved to 4-1 overall and to 4-0 in the NWC. Willamette fell to 2-6, including 2-4 in the NWC.

    (WOMEN'S TENNIS) TACOMA, WASH. -- Pacific Lutheran University defeated Willamette University, 7-2, in a Northwest Conference match at the University of Puget Sound Tennis Pavilion on Saturday, Feb. 24, but it wasnâ??t easy for the Lutes. PLU needed a tie-breaker to win the #3 doubles match and two of the Lutesâ?? four wins in singles included a set decided by a 7-5 score. The Lutes improved to 3-0 on the season (3-0 in the NWC), while Willamette fell to 2-4 overall, 2-2 in the NWC.

The win improved Willamette to 2-1 in the NWC, while moving the Bearcats to 2-3 overall. Pacific dropped to 0-5 overall, 0-3 in the NWC.

    (WOMEN'S TENNIS) SALEM, ORE. -- Whitman College won a close match at #1 doubles on Sunday, Feb. 18, as Margo Lentz and Katie Collier outlasted Willamette Universityâ??s Tiffany Kam (Jr., Pearl City, HI/Punahou School) and Alaine Anderson (Jr., Santa Ana, CA/Foothills HS), 9-7. The win by Lentz and Collier, plus a win at #2 doubles, started the Missionaries on their way to a 7-2 team victory over the Bearcats at the Courthouse Tennis Club. Whitman improved to 3-2, including 1-1 in the Northwest Conference. Willamette dropped to 1-3 overall, 1-1 in the NWC.

    (WOMEN'S TENNIS) SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University won two of three doubles matches, but visiting Southern Oregon University swept the six singles matches to rally for a 7-2 victory over the Bearcats on Saturday, Feb. 17 at the Courthouse Tennis Club. Southern Oregon upped its record to 3-0, while Willamette fell to 1-2.

    (WOMEN'S TENNIS) SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University swept the double positions and won five of six single matches, including two decided by 10-point tie-breakers after splitting the first two sets, as the Bearcats downed Whitworth College, 8-1, in a Northwest Conference women's tennis match, Feb. 17 at the Courthouse Tennis Club. Willamette improved to 1-1 on the season and to 1-0 in the NWC. Whitworth opened its season at 0-1, 0-1 in the NWC.
  • Willamette Women's Tennis Team Opens Season against NCAA Division I University of Portland

    PORTLAND, ORE. The Willamette University womenâ??s tennis team opened the 2007 season with a 7-0 loss to the University of Portland on Saturday, Jan. 27, at UPâ??s indoor courts. The Pilots, who compete in NCAA Division I, improved to 3-1 on the season. Willamette, a member of NCAA Division III, was playing its first match of the season.
